unit 15 audio visual promos LO1 report

Lo1: Understand the purpose, approaches and contrasts between different audio-visual promos.

Mortal Kombat 11 Trailer

The state purpose of this promo is to sell the game to its audience and In this trailer the background music is the song Immortal by 21 Savage which was released shortly before the reveal of the game and was made specifically for promotion of the game. They chose 21 savage as normally his lyrics are gruesome and violent which correlate with the grittiness of the Mortal Kombat games. Plus the age demographic for both the game and 21s audience is near the same 18-25. In the Promo it showed a cinematic of how the game would play with the hard song in the background this was used to build hype for the game and maybe bring some new people into the game as they would hear the song and be interested in the game. The trailers setting is very dark with crumbled up buildings and a lot of Korean visuals. That link to how martial arts is mainly Asian and originated there. The choice of 21 savage as the artist is because he raps very real and dark bars that relate to his old life and hard life can be when born into a situation like his. The song was previewed with the release of the trailer and the small clip of the song gained notoriety due to 21 savages rapping style being featured in many YouTube videos and being shared over the internet. This then brought hype and notoriety to both the game and 21 savages yet to be released at the time album "I am better than I was".

The Ad starts of with ought the music but as soon as the fighting begins the songs cuts in and then plays until near the end where one of the fighters die and the other wins. The artists used lyrics that heavily related to fighting and killing as to relate to what was being shown on the video which was people beating each other up. The artist even interacts with the audience as he states "your next" after the fight as the words also appear on the screen. As it was only the first official trailer it only showed a cinematic fight between three of the characters that would be in the game, plus it shows hints as to what the story would be about. The trailer makes use of the beat as the dark piano creates a tense and also creepy atmosphere that fits the style the trailer. The trailer appeals to its audience by showing fan favourite characters through wide and master shots. Plus even more gruesome deaths to show their audience that this will be the best game in the franchise. The use of OTS shots also shows what one of the characters are looking at (which was the other character) allowing the other character to show of how threatening they are to the audience.

overall the main purpose of this advert was to excite and entertain people while also advertise the game to players who would by it and black ethnic groups through the rap song over it.

in comparison with this the trailer for the Fast and the Furious 7 movie uses similar elements such as music and editing to create an exciting advert for the movie that purposes to build hype from the it. The loud obnoxious beat drop that they use is used in the second half of the trailer and is built up throughout the start of the it until it gets to the main action sequences in which the bass drops and the sceptical starts, this offers the audience with just a few scenes of crazy shots that use CGI to make the advertisement exciting and make the movie profitable as this would lead to fans wanting more from what they just saw. also t like in the Mortal Kombat trailer there are scenes in which there is no music. In the Fast and the Furious trailer that is at the beginning of it. In a scene that is purely for sceptical and action, It presents the crew parachuting their cars and then acting a bus holding someone. This scene can connote tension as it uses a lot of slow motion effects to make the explosions and action more vesical. But it can also connote nostalgia as this is a direct comparison to the scene in the 5th movie in which they rescue a character from a prison bus by using cars and such. I'm not sure about that it just reminded me of that scene. The difference in the tone in both adverts is shown through the music as the Mortal Kombat trailer uses a very dark song that has a dark piano and very murder focused lyrics. This is used to compliment the theme of the game as the use of this non diegetic sound also incorporated with the diegetic sounds of bones breaking and people being punched creates a very intimidating atmosphere, presenting itself to the audience and a very violent game that then connotes to the audience a sense of excitement as they may believe that it is going to be a very good game due to this, this can also be told as building hype for it. However the use of "Get low till the whistle blow" is used to present a very fun and exciting atmosphere as when watching both trailers their themes are drastically different as for the Fast trailer, the music makes the movie feel action packed and epic. Overall I feel like they both immerse you into the advert and make you want to either play the game or watch the movie.

However compared to this the music video of Wyclef Jean by Young Thug uses things like action and the music to create a parody of a music video. Presented by the fact that the narrative driven video mocks stereotypical  things like the Artist and misogyny and the sexualization of women in order to subvert the expectation of the audience and make the song more viral due to its wacky story. While it is a narrative story, it rarely relates the video to the lyrics and instead ops to divide to video and the song. This is because the story relates around the artist (Young Thug) and how he didn't appear for the recording of the video, leaving the director (who is also the narrator) to only use B rolls of models and of cars. The use of this lead the music video to blow up as people would talk about the song online or in real life about weather it was fake or real and how interesting the style of music was. Meaning like with the trailer for both MK and Fast Five it uses its own feature to create hype for the brand. Just like the trailers the video uses mese-en-scene in ways to enhance the subvercion such as with the props like the baseball bats and how the director mocks how they are cheap they are, shown below. Another example would be how he changes to colour of the models cloths in post, suggesting he was too tired and fed up with the process of making the video.

Similar to this, the music video for Wokeuplikethis by Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert uses mese-en-scene and editing to create a fast paced video that supports the song in the background. features like costume design present to the audience the narrative of the track, which is that people are copying the main artists, Carti. The use of the costumes appearing like lookalikes and the lyrics being similar to the video would present to new listeners or people who haven't heard of the artist realise that he is popular to spawn clones of his work, leading them to take more interest into Carti and his music. The guest feature Lil Uzi Vert is presented as dark and demonic through a sudden transition of colours and location from a bright prison with an open top, to a dark room with no light, Along with Uzis presentation through:
actions, lyrics and expression he promotes himself as a dark and demon like character. This is also shown through props as Uzi is seen holding a mini Uzi which is used to show his branding as he originally created his name through people describing his rapping as machine gun like (like an Uzi) However with all of this the music video is mainly jut a performance video as it shows the rappers just dancing and reciting their lyrics. Even so the video that originally came out in 2017 has managed to become viral and bring both artist more listeners.
In comparison all four of the videos use different Mise-en-scene elements to advertise the brand of the artist or product. Such as with the trailer for Fat and furious 7 and the music video for 'Wokeuplikethis*'. Both videos use music and fast paced editing to to express the actor and artists brands. Furthermore, the props used in each video are very similar with fake guns and cars being used in them, however while the music video uses these to show off the artist brand and how scary they are, the trailer for the movie uses these props in the action setting and to enhance the visuals for the audience. Where as with the Young Thug music video and the Mortal Kombat trailer they both appeal to their target audience by interacting with them in similar ways. While Mortal Kombat directly breaks the 4th way and talks to the audience 'Your next' in order to sell their product as when they buy it they will play it as well. However the music video breaks the 4th wall in order to parody the artists and to mock censor rules.
